Mr. Andrew Glencross

Family:
My family is my Dad (Mike), mom (Paula), sister (Christy) and my dog (Rocky).
Hobbies:
I like playing video games, making action movies with the video camera, playing with my golden retreiver "Rocky", watching movies with my dad on his giant HDTV, working on the computer, going to the beach, hiking in the mountains, drawing, and of course Taekwon-Do. O yah... i want to learn to play guitar.
Occupation:
I had a paper route last fall and winter, does that count?
Occupation/Education Highlights:
I went to Berney School K-5 and I am now getting ready to go to Pioneer Jr. High
Years in TKD:
4+ years
Why I started TKD:
When I was little I wanted to be like the guys on TV and in the movies. Most kids want to do Martial Arts but not very many have the opportunity. I feel pretty lucky to be able to do Taekwon-Do, and I get to do it with my dad.
Best TKD moments:
- Earning my 1st Dan Black Belt and using my dad as my Ho Sin Sul partner because my other two partners werent able to make it.
- I won 1st place in patterns at Regionals in Walla Walla March 2007 and I lost in the Grandchampion round to Mr. Reinginger who is also from our school. It was fun going up against several different kids and adults from all over the country and then it came down to us two... I didnt mind losing to him though, he is awsome, and he is only 9.
Worst TKD moment:
I am not sure I have one.... I will have to think a little more about this one.
Favorite aspect of TKD:
Ho Sin Sul (grappling, self defense) is my favorite part of Taekwon-Do. I really like the realism of it and practicing how to deal with fighting.
Least favorite aspect of TKD:
Step-Sparring - my dad laughed when I told him this but I have to admit that step-sparring is kind of boring to me... but it is definitly good for me because it helps me with the terminology and makes me think about what weapons to use on certain targets.
Advice for new students:
My advice to new students is to have fun and not be nervous. Its always a little scary when we start something new but our Taekwon-Do school is very fun and everyone is really nice.
Advice for older students:
Its easy to sit at home and play video games or watch TV and sometimes I dont want to leave the house to go to class but I always have a great time when I go. So I guess my advice to other students is to stick to it, even when you want to be lazy. We only have Taekwon-Do class a couple of hours a week so take advantage of it. Once you get to class you will always be glad you didnt stay home.
What does TKD mean to you?
I am very lucky that my dad has been doing Taekwon-Do for so long and that he is my instructor. He is a good teacher and I am learning that it is very important to take care of myself
What keeps you going?
I have a lot of fun with the other students, both the kids and the adults. I like learning new techniques and how to use them properly.
Future TKD goals:
My next goal is to achieve 2nd degree Black Belt. My dad, Mr. Glencross, always talks about how getting to Black Belt is just the begining of training, and now that I am a Black Belt and I have gone to a few Black Belt workouts I know that I have a lot to learn.
